Some People Grumble Thorns

“Some people are always  grumbling because roses have thorns. I am thankful that thorns have roses.” Alphonse Karr

A true example of reframing can be seen from Alphonse Karr’s quotation. It is a well-known fact that people avoid the thorns on a rose bush and often see them as a vice. Alphonse Karr chooses to look at the thorns as a positive to a rosebush. He views the entire rose from the viewpoint of the thorn. Sometimes in life we have to look at things from the opposite viewpoint. We need to try and see the positive no matter what viewpoint we are afforded. Often no matter where we are in life it is easy to fall victim to the negative viewpoint. An individual always has to try and see the positive in whatever shoe in life that he or she wears. There is always a more positive way in which to envision things. I recently ran into a family friend whom I had visited in the hospital. He was so happy that I gave him a different viewpoint in regards to the recovery that he was currently enduring. Individuals need to celebrate all that they currently have. There are so many things about life that are taken for granted daily. There is always an opposite point of view that can be stepped into by an individual. Whenever I feel myself getting negative in my viewpoint I try and remember all of the blessings that I have. I can think of numerous blessings that a person must be thankful for. Living in a free country has to be the number one privilege that I see most often that is taken for granted. We are all incredibly blessed to be able to live freely and pursue our personal hopes and dreams. It is an incredible privilege to be able to have your own free choices as to what path of life to pursue. It is my dream for everyone to pursue his/her dreams as far as what to pursue in his/her daily life. I think that no matter what a person has gone through they are always capable of attempting to always seek for a more positive viewpoint in whatever they are encountering. I have spoken to many a survivor and have always stressed the importance of learning the skill of positive reframing. We all have moments and I think that it is incredibly important for individuals to be honest about what they are going through from day to day. I tried to explain (and was successful from what the individual said….) that it could have always been worse. When you affect a person positively it always seems much easier to lift yourself up. I am very thankful to you as always for reading and I look forward to any replies or comments that you may have.

George Burnham

“I can’t do it, never accomplished anything; I will try has accomplished wonders” George P. Burnham

An individual going through a traumatic life event has to know that there are always at least two resolutions to every problem. At the very least a person can make the decision to exert effort and try for something more or a person can choose to throw in the towel and allow status quo to remain. A survivor of any sort of an injury needs to realize the power that he/she has on their complete self. The entirety of a being is made up of many different parts. Each aspect of a person has equal importance. While it is incredibly important to be motivated to push forward a person needs to realize where they were able to draw up the motivation from. In my experience people can draw upon the motivation that they exude to others by example. In my situation I am driven to continue doing what I am doing based on the feedback that I hear back from patients and families. Life is certainly not easy and the recovery from a traumatic injury is certainly not easy. An individual has to make an internal pact never to give up. There is no limit on how much effort a person can put forth. People need to know his/her self and what motivates them. I always encourage patients to encourage their peers because I realize that the most credible individuals are those that have had experience with going through a vice of their own.

Every person is able to help somebody along the way. We should all strive to encourage one another to never give up. Humans are social creatures and we all greatly benefit from encouragement from one another. I think that strength comes in much part from encouragement. Self-motivation is certainly instrumental and nothing can be achieved without that; yet when people are unsure as to where to focus their energies, advice from someone who has already walked your path is invaluable. I encourage every patient who I interact with to do their diligence and attempt to make connections with others who are taking part in the same recovery as they are. Whenever someone begins a venture to regain his/her life they need support and comradery in order to maintain their motivation to keep moving forward. Whenever somebody is recovering he/she cannot be left strictly to their own devices in my opinion. There is always room for encouragement and improvement. A person needs to have a state of mind that realizes how utterly useless it is to give up. A person has achieved many a great things by attempting a feat. Even if they are not quite capable of attaining the goal at hand they have at least laid a solid groundwork for the path ahead. I thank you very much for reading and would encourage any responses that you may have.

Langston Hughes Hold On Fast to Dreams

“Hold fast onto dreams, for if dreams die life is a broken winged bird that cannot fly” Langston Hughes

This quote by Langston Hughes is incredibly poignant for an individual that has sustained any sort of a life altering injury. A person going through difficulty needs to hold on tight to the dreams that they have. I suggest always trying to foster dreams to develop so that an individual will always have aspirations and hopes. It is sometimes very easy to lose sight of where you want to be. By holding onto your dreams you can maintain a sense of ambition and motivation as you proceed forward on life’s path for you. Life is all about motivation and there are many different ways in which to attain this. The best is to awaken a sense of motivation within you. Internal motivation is often the most difficult to come by, yet no doubt the most useful. Individuals need to assume some responsibility for their own dreams and happiness. Life sometimes gets in the way; yet there are always several ways to solve a problem. From my experience I have found that people generally want to help an assist one another as they are trying to get through life. I have been extremely forthright in regards to the integral part in my life that role models have played. They can help to inspire and serve as role models as you are trying to build the fabric as to what will be your life. I think that people can be incredibly valuable to a person who is trying to establish a career. An individual always needs to keep a grasp onto his/her dreams. A person should never lose sight of where they envision his/her self. I think that dreams are essential to maintaining motivation. An unmotivated individual can do nothing but harm the culture of workmanlike individuals. An unmotivated individual can upset the whole balance of a culture. People want to be useful and feel as though they are pursuing his/her dreams. I thank you so much for reading and I would love to read any thoughts that you may have!

Gail Devers

“Every accomplishment begins the same way; with the decision to try.” Gail Devers

Gail Devers helps people to realize that every single accomplishment in this life all had begun the exact same way. Every accomplishment has begun with the decision to attempt and try. Nothing in this world begins without any effort. Without effort people lack the motivation to become motivated and try for bigger things. People always have to want more. We all need to feel as though we can improve and go bigger, stronger and better. No matter how big or small the feat or desire is people always have to want to improve. If we are not striving to forever improve; we simply exist. To truly live is to attempt to improve and to make life better for yourself and those around you. I have found that by opening your horizons people are further open to experiencing life on a far bigger scale. By experiencing life on a far bigger scale we can become open to all of the wonders that are available to us. I believe that people all need to realize that we are all far more alike than we are different. People have to have a desire to improve and make things better for those around them. There has to be a culture that believes in helping one another along the path of life. If a person never allows him/herself to feel the desire to improve and change, then a society will no longer seek for improvement. With this upcoming election, we are all hearing from the candidates and what his/her views are in relation to change and improvement. Gail Devers quote allows us to realize that life is forever about the decision to improve and change. It greatly helps individuals to simplify things out to understand what is required of them. Those that are able to summon desire within them are forever in a far better situation. I encourage all of those who are able to encourage others who may benefit from hearing from you. We are all the same inside. We are all people and we all have challenges that we attempt to negotiate daily to get through life. Younger people are looking to grow up and admire us. As individuals we all have the responsibility to lead by example and help to pave out a path for those that will follow in our footsteps. A person has to always remember that every accomplishment no matter how big or small all started out in the same way. All achievements began in the exact same way. There has to first be the conscious decision to try.

I thank you all for reading and I would love to hear any reflections that you may have.

Bethany Hamilton

Recently I became aware that one of the most inspirational athletes that I have ever become aware of is traveling to my area to give a speech. Bethany Hamilton was attacked by a shark doing what she loves to do more than anything. She has always been an avid surfer and surfing was not only a way of life for her but also her family. The culture of Bethany Hamilton’s life was never to give up. After she was attacked by the shark I am sure that she needed to reflect upon this constantly. I will attend her speaking segment with my family so as I can hopefully absorb some greater inspiration as I am hoping to tackle the challenges in my life. People are by far the greatest influencers I feel. What I have come to learn is that life is all about challenges and how you tackle them. An individual such as Bethany Hamilton is incredibly inspirational to me. She did not let any physical disabilities get in her way. Despite getting mauled by the shark Bethany was has still been able to maintain a champion. Champions are all around us but they need to be acknowledged. Since sustaining my injury I am much better able to acknowledge and celebrate individuals who have gone through difficulties in life. Survivors now stand out to me as heroic because I know how tempting it is to give up. I have often reflected upon who she is and what she has been able to accomplish despite her disability. Bethany has often said that she is in a far better situation to affect a great many numbers of people since she has sustained her injury. She instantaneously was transformed into a hero for all people overcoming disabilities. I will certainly attend her speech with bells on because I feel that any inspiration that I can gain off of her would be inspirational to my being. I am incredibly excited to see Bethany in person. She has served as a role model for me for sure. I do not have the same celebrity status as Bethany Hamilton but I still know that I help to inspire and show survivors the way to building a better and more enthusiastic life for his/her self. I am absolutely enamored of Bethany Hamilton and I know what it is to have your world turned upside down by an attained disability. I identify with Bethany because she was not born with her disability. Her disability occurred in the wake of an unfortunate accident. She has maintained her faith in spite of her attained disability. Bethany has depended on her faith in God to get her through. Whenever I am having a hard day I reflect upon Bethany and remember just how much she has had to overcome. I would love to hear any reflections that you may have and I thank you for reading.
